July 4th, 2024, WMCO members gathered at Conestoga College’s Woodworking Centre for an engaging and impactful day of Spray Finishing Training. Led by David Blackler, professor and finishing technologist, this event provided attendees with both theoretical knowledge and practical experience designed to enhance the skills and processes of finishing departments.
The training began with an in-depth classroom session, where participants explored critical aspects of finishing techniques. Topics included:
- HVLP Spray Equipment and Airless-Air Assist Systems: Understanding their advantages and challenges.
- Material Application: From stains to sealers and topcoats, attendees gained valuable insights into applying water- and solvent-based products.
- Troubleshooting Skills: Identifying and solving common finishing challenges to improve efficiency.
- Quality Assurance: Strategies to refine process control and ensure top-tier results.
The afternoon session brought attendees into the shop, where they worked with Conestoga College’s state-of-the-art Virtual Spray System. This innovative technology allowed participants to practice and perfect their spray techniques while receiving real-time feedback on their performance. The system’s scoring feature provided valuable insights into potential cost-saving opportunities, ensuring attendees left with actionable takeaways to implement in their own facilities.
The catered lunch provided an excellent opportunity for attendees to connect with industry peers, share experiences, and discuss the morning’s insights. This collaborative environment fostered valuable discussions that extended into the practical training sessions.
