On May 9th, 2024, WMCO members experienced a unique and engaging Plant Tour Focus Group at Belair Office Products Inc., hosted by David Larmer and Scott Vanderform. As Belair continues its journey through the Digital Integration Project, their innovative approaches are transforming how they operate, showcasing their commitment to becoming even more advanced.
The day began with a guided plant tour led by David and Scott through one of WMCO’s most unique member shops. Attendees were given a pre-tour primer on what to observe, specifically focusing on automation, continuous improvement (CI), and digital integration. The tour highlighted how Belair has been tackling common manufacturing challenges with forward-thinking solutions, providing invaluable insights into processes that can be applied to other shops.
Participants explored Belair’s state-of-the-art equipment and workflow, gaining firsthand insight into the integration of digital tools designed to optimize production and minimize waste. As Belair’s Digital Integration Project progresses, it is evident that their operations will only become more sophisticated, further positioning them as a leader in the industry.
Following the tour, attendees were treated to a catered lunch, sponsored by Craftsmen Hardwoods Inc. and Homag. The lunch offered a great opportunity for networking and casual discussions. Afterward, a post-tour discussion encouraged participants to reflect on what they observed, asking questions like, “What did you see?” and “What might you have missed?” Attendees shared their insights on how the key takeaways from the tour could be applied to their own facilities, with a particular focus on Belair’s Visual Factory.
The day concluded with an in-depth look at Belair’s Visual Factory—a system designed to provide real-time production tracking and optimize workflow efficiency. Participants considered how the visual management techniques and digital tools used at Belair could enhance their own manufacturing processes, reinforcing the importance of Continuous Improvement and Digital Integration in the industry.
WMCO extends a heartfelt thank you to David Larmer and Scott Vanderform for hosting this inspiring tour. WMCO also expresses its gratitude to Craftsmen Hardwoods Inc. and Homag for sponsoring the lunch, and to all attendees for their active participation.
