The BWA Doubleheader Health & Safety Online Workshop took place virtually on September 1st, 2020. Members logging in from across Southwestern Ontario for an information-packed day of training. BWA is focused on your H&S needs moving our newest Health & Safety workshop to online delivery and splitting the day between two topics.
Geoff Rowatt, of Industrial Safety Trainers, was the BWA’s key trainer at our premier Doubleheader Health and Safety Training Event. The day focused on Human Resources – Policies and Procedures followed by Safety Talks for a Woodworking Facility.
The morning session focused on HR policies and procedures to help build an HR policies program and enhance current programs. To manage a company’s talent, Rowatt reviewed how an employee handbook and employee contract contrast and also complement each other. The event included time on tailoring policies and procedures to attending business’s needs. Focused on the wood industry, (Rowatt) covered topics including Absenteeism, Infectious Illness, Progressive Discipline, Communications (i.e. cell phone, open-door policies, etc.), Fit for Duty, Dress Code, Career Rewards, Hazzard/Safety/Harassment Reporting, and much more.
After the lunch break, the afternoon workshop provided participants with various safety talks/safety rules focused on the wood industry’s needs. Rowatt covered how a planned safety talk can help to train workers and keep them focused on maintaining a safe workplace. A compelling safety talk uses effective language to easily convey the message. One of the main goals of safety talks is to keep employees at a stage 3 learning level.
Rowatt covered what is best to include and what can be left out of safety talk documents reviewing topics of how to document content for delivery, employee recommendations, future considerations, tracking of training, and more.
The event rounded off with a Q&A at the end to recapture the lessons learned and help instill greater awareness and knowledge of the day’s lessons.
