Quarterly Networking Event & AGM – June 19, 2025
Held at Conestoga College – Event Hall | Tour of the Woodworking Centre
WMCO’s June Quarterly Networking Event brought members together at Conestoga College’s formal event hall for a focused day of industry insight, supplier expertise, and valuable networking. From core material standards to global trade opportunities, the day provided practical strategies for navigating today’s shifting markets.
Morning Sessions: Materials & Innovation
The day began with two in-depth presentations focused on panel materials and sustainability:
-
Jim Petkoglou (Columbia Forest Products) broke down the differences in hardwood plywood core types and how regional standards affect sourcing and application.
-
Mathieu Russell (Tafisa Canada) provided a forward-looking view of MDF, particleboard, and TFL, highlighting Tafisa’s new sustainable material lines and the market trends shaping customer expectations.
Adhesives, Edgebanding & Practical Best Practices
After a networking lunch generously provided by WMCO and our sponsors, the focus shifted to product performance and market adaptation:
-
Brodie Riske (Helmetin) explored adhesive market shifts, including the effects of tariff changes and supply volatility on product selection and procurement.
-
Derek Boyko (Teknaform) walked through best practices in edgebanding, comparing PVC, ABS, and natural wood options while addressing performance, aesthetics, and sourcing strategies.
Final Session: Expanding into Global Markets
Bill Macheras, Manager of the Infocentre at Global Affairs Canada and a seasoned Trade Commissioner, closed the speaker lineup with a powerful session on export opportunities for Ontario manufacturers. Bill outlined federal supports for businesses seeking to diversify beyond U.S. markets, offering guidance on strategy, logistics, and funding.
Closing Tour: Inside the Conestoga Woodworking Centre
The event wrapped up with a guided tour of the Conestoga Woodworking Centre—Ontario’s largest post-secondary training facility for wood manufacturing. Attendees explored the labs, equipment, and classrooms that are shaping the next generation of skilled trades professionals.
