BWA Offers Colleges Engagement with Industry Partners for Program Development!

  • News, Uncategorized

BWA sits on the steering committee for the Cabinetmaking Program at Georgian College. By bringing industry to the table, college programs can continue to develop and grow to meet the demands in todays wood product industrial workplace!

Twice per year the Cabinetmaking program at Georgian College conducts steering committee meetings. These meetings are designed to make sure their program content reflects the evolving needs of industry today.

The BWA plays a strategic role by bringing BWA members to these meetings, where they can provide their honest and direct feedback in what they are seeing in terms of employees, and what the college needs to do to make sure they are doing the right things to make sure graduates have the right skills to support the industry.

While technology like CNC and new variations of tools are emerging, it is very important not to forget the very basics that are required to be successful in a cabinetmaking shop today. Committee members come from various perspectives to provide their input: manufacturers, designers, and supply chain partners all participate. Georgian makes a very concerted effort to solicit this input and feedback from industry to help evolve their programs in-line with a changing industry.

The BWA is pleased to support this activity. For this past steering committee meeting held December 6, 2013, at the Georgian College Barrie Campus, BWA members Glen Small from Royal Oak Kitchens, and Troy McMann from Blum Canada contributed their perspectives and also provided feedback on their shop. Congratulations to Georgian college, and to the participating industry members who are working to ensure our future workforce has what it takes to make things happen for our industry!

Below, BWA board member Glen Small of Royal Oak Kitchens and Sepp Gmeiner of Lignam Consulting speak with Georgian College Cabinetmaking Instructor Lynn MacKinlay.
