Recently the BWA launched its brand-new Health and Safety Program for the wood industry!
The first event in the series was Health and Safety & the Law and took place on March 4th, 2020 in Kitchener. It was an information-packed event providing attendees with a comprehensive understanding of what supervisory roles need to be aware of, a clear understanding of their legal requirements, as well as how to employ their due diligence and responsibilities.
Ted Conners, of Industrial Safety Trainers, was there as the BWA’s key trainer for the day. As a former woodworker and product engineer, Ted understands well the challenges and perspectives that wood manufacturing companies must work through to meet industry compliance.
Throughout the day, attendees got to learn in-depth about how to successfully interpret the Ontario Health & Safety Act & Regulations Consolidated Edition “the Green Book Manual” and apply it to their factories.
The Health and Safety & the Law training event highlighted many high value take away points supervisors, owners, managers, and health & safety reps can use and be mindful of at their factories.
The training addressed so many topics it was challenging to fit it all in a single day! Topics included: transfer of responsibilities, what companies can to do better protect if they are ever brought to court; a safety culture at work; the counter-intuitive age range for accidents and why; a deeper understanding of legal clauses and terms; navigating human rights vs. health & safety; when the right to refuse (work) is applicable and when it isn’t and much, much more.
“The Health & Safety seminar was very informative and helpful to me.
It was a great stepping stone to the next level of learning. I learned how to maneuver through the Green book and learned from my peers.
Keep up the good work.” – Terri-Sue Clare, Diamond CNC
The event rounded off with a quick quiz at the end to recapture the lessons learned and help instill greater awareness and knowledge from all the attendees. If you haven’t attended this training event and have ever thought it may be worth refreshing your understanding of Health & Safety in your factories, you do not want to miss the next opportunity!
Watch for our next event to be posted on the BWA’s website.
